This project represents GW Cancer Center’s community outreach programs, establishing a physical presence within Ward VIII. Imagined as a manifestation of the Pillars of Wellness (ie. physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental) the project integrates biophilia and amplifies local culture. The applied color theory began as an abstraction of a painting called Green April (1969), by Sam Gilliam who was once described as the “dean” of the city’s arts community. The resultant abstracted strategy also references the many local community murals. This is perhaps most evident through a graphic mural applied to the perimeter of the community spaces, acting as a datum which unites the overall project and its many disparate colors.
