On a remote West Virginia farm, a new sauna rises from the legacy of decades-old structures once lost to fire. Designed and built through a collaborative, research-driven process, the project brought together students, architects, and craftsmen in a hands-on experiment in rural, site-specific design. Nestled beside a spring-fed pond, the sauna reimagines tradition through modern craftsmanship and material sensibility.

This exterior transformation reimagines a traditional warehouse-office structure in Hagerstown, MD. A dynamic perforated metal screen wraps the existing office volume, giving the building a bold new identity while preserving its core structure. The renovation enhances the building’s visibility and reflects the innovative spirit of the company within, all without major interior disruption.

The home is situated on a secluded plot in the mountains of Deep Creek Lake with stunning waterfront views. The space was designed with a modern aesthetic that combines contemporary styles with more traditional materials that tie in the surrounding elements. An open-plan living area allows for plenty of natural light and an unobstructed view of breathtaking mountain views. Inside, the spaces are designed to maximize comfort and convenience, while outside, the landscape was designed to provide a private, tranquil setting.

Set on 100 acres along the Cacapon River in West Virginia, this master plan supports a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering Appalachian youth. GriD Architects is guiding a multi-phase vision that begins with operational improvements to the existing farm, bakery, and market (Phase I), followed by strategies that maintain full functionality during future campus development (Phase II). Phase III envisions a fully realized campus that reflects the organization’s mission and accommodates its evolving programs.

This new warehouse-office prototype for Smartlink Technologies is designed for efficiency, flexibility, and future adaptability. Featuring offices above the warehouse, the layout unifies departments while allowing for potential conversion into multiple tenant spaces or full office use. A simple bar form, vaulted roof, and exterior balcony/stair optimize thermal performance and maximize usable square footage. The narrow footprint and clerestory windows ensure abundant natural light throughout, supporting both open and enclosed office layouts.

Located on one of the last available parcels in a growing arts district, this multifamily building serves as a transitional buffer between dense development and an adjacent single-family neighborhood. The design reduces perceived scale through massing strategies and familiar residential elements like hipped roofs, dormers, and bay windows—creating a thoughtful blend of context and contemporary housing.

Located on the southern edge of one of the most important public open spaces in the City, this hotel is the conversion of an existing modernist office tower. While the relatively small and irregularly shaped floor plate (with an open air atrium) was a poor fit for a contemporary office setting, it is perfect fit for a 110-key boutique hotel.  And while the horizontal site connections are remarkable, perhaps the most unique set of connections occur in section, from a rooftop restaurant with panoramic views across the City, to a subterranean day spa/bath complex which will inform the hotel branding.

This Urban Penthouse  is a proposed penthouse condo addition to an existing iconic mid century building in Annapolis' historic downtown core. The project's idyllic location, fronting Church Circle, is the most immediately recognizable source of inspiration... a point of departure for the creation of a penthouse condo with no parallel in Annapolis. 

Nearly four decades after a family first settled on this remote Appalachian property in Pendleton County, West Virginia, a modest A-frame cabin had weathered into disrepair. Originally a one-room retreat, it had gradually expanded over time—until structural issues and water damage prompted a thoughtful renovation. The redesign preserves the memory of the original home while reimagining it for continued use, balancing nostalgia with renewal.

Perched on the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry, this project reimagines a modest, piecemeal cottage as two linked A-frame pavilions. A flat roof connects old and new, creating a seamless transition between the original home and a new living space oriented toward sweeping river views. The existing A-frame was extended to house the entry and master suite, while a rotated roof ridge on the new volume opens up expansive glazing rarely possible with traditional eaves.

The fit-out of 107 Forbes for CFG Bank’s Annapolis office emphasizes natural light and views of West Annapolis through expansive perimeter glazing. A straightforward HVAC strategy locates ductwork above corridor ceilings, preserving open ceilings in offices and conference rooms. These exposed ceilings are painted a deep blue to align with the bank’s branding and subtly frame exterior views, reinforcing a clean, modern aesthetic.

Located in Baltimore, this full-gut renovation of a three-story rowhouse transforms the existing masonry shell into a flexible live/work space. Initially designed as the corporate headquarters for a local developer, the layout accommodates future residential conversion—with spaces adaptable as either a living room or workstation, master bedroom or conference room. A new side kitchen addition takes advantage of a rare Baltimore side yard, creating room for a private deck. Raw finishes, exposed ductwork, and industrial detailing reflect both the character of the original structure and the personality of the client.

This tenant fit-out for a national law firm’s Annapolis satellite office delivers a Class A aesthetic within strict budget and structural constraints. A bold red-banded corridor defines the design, linking private offices to a shared kitchen and work area. Low floor-to-floor heights prompted an open ceiling concept throughout, except along the corridor, where a dropped bulkhead conceals building systems. Frameless glass partitions enhance natural light flow, while a clear spatial diagram separates client-facing and internal zones with efficiency and clarity.

This tenant fit-out for a newly established law firm balances a fresh brand identity with the gravitas of its founders' legal expertise. The design pairs bright, modern finishes with traditional materials to convey both approachability and professionalism. To support privacy and openness, the plan is organized into two zones: a reception-to-conference-room sequence unified by the firm's signature blue, and a more private office wing separated by a central kitchen and collaborative workspace.

This light-filled office fit-out in Annapolis, Maryland, supports the mission of a philanthropic organization focused on education, health, and human services. The design emphasizes clarity and openness, using natural light and minimal material palettes to create an uplifting environment. Spaces are organized to encourage collaboration while maintaining a calm, reflective atmosphere—aligning with the organization’s goal of community impact through grantmaking.

This new academic facility in Washington, D.C. is designed to support a premier occupational therapy education program. It includes a large lecture space for both in-person and virtual learning, a series of hands-on training labs, and designated areas for movement instruction. Flexible study lounges and faculty offices support a collaborative, student-centered environment that emphasizes practical experience and academic excellence.
